TvDimmer - NightCompanion
Enjoy a Comfortable Late-Night Viewing Experience on Your Android TV
Introduction
Is your Smart TV screen too bright when watching movies at night? TvDimmer - NightCompanion is the perfect utility app designed to give you a more comfortable viewing experience in the dark. Developed by TribalApps, this intuitive TV screen dimmer allows you to seamlessly lower your display brightness beyond standard system settings and apply customizable color filters tailored for nighttime entertainment.
Key Features
Take full control over your TV display. Effortlessly adjust your screen's brightness and intensity to match the ambient lighting of your room, making late-night movie marathons much more pleasant.
Tailor your display output to your exact liking with multiple built-in color overlays:
- Night Mode Filter: Smooth, balanced overlay for general evening viewing.
- Red Light Filter: A red filter option optimized for exotic lighting
- Purple Filter: A unique purple filter, an alternative screen personalization
Set it and forget it! With the Routine feature, you can schedule exact activation and deactivation times. TvDimmer will automatically turn your preferred filters on and off according to your daily schedule.
Note: Because Android TV hardware and operating systems vary, routine reliability depends on your TV model's power management. Check our setup guide below for easy optimization!
We care about your hardware. TvDimmer features an integrated Screen Guard / Burn-In Protection system. It automatically manages filter intensity during prolonged use to help minimize the risk of screen burn-in on sensitive panels. Advanced users also have the flexibility to manage this feature manually at their own risk →
Step-by-Step Setup Guide
To ensure TvDimmer works flawlessly on your Android TV, please follow these two simple setup steps. This ensures the app can apply the screen dimmer overlay and keep the automated routine running reliably in the background.
1. Enable "Display over other apps" Permission
To dim your screen and apply color filters, TvDimmer requires permission to display its overlay over other running applications.
Manual Steps:
- Open your TV Settings and navigate to Apps.
- Select "Special app access".
- Click on "Display over other apps".
- Find TvDimmer in the list and enable the switch.
Note: If the automatic setup button inside the app doesn't work, please follow these steps manually.
2. Disable Power Saving (Battery Optimization)
Many Android TVs feature aggressive RAM and power management that can shut down background processes. To make sure your scheduled routines trigger perfectly every time, adjust the settings below based on your device:
- Open Settings and select "Privacy".
- Go to "Special app access".
- Select "Battery optimization".
- Find TvDimmer-NightCompanion in the list (you may need to scroll to the bottom).
- Select it and choose "Don't optimize".
- Open Settings and go to "Apps" (or "Show all apps").
- Select "TvDimmer".
- Look for an option named "Power management", "Battery", or "Autostart".
- Set the permission to "No restrictions" or "Allowed".
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Find quick answers to common questions about TvDimmer's features, performance, and settings.
1. Why does the dimmer close by itself when I open other apps (like YouTube)?
This is likely due to the TV's memory management (RAM). To save resources for demanding apps, many Android TVs close background apps very aggressively.
The Solution: Go to your TV Settings > Apps > TvDimmer, and disable battery optimization (or allow background execution). You can find detailed steps for your specific TV model in our Setup Guide above. After doing this, the overlay should stay active.
Note: On older TV models or devices with very limited RAM, the system might still close it occasionally.
2. Does the app reduce the TV's actual hardware backlight?
No. The app uses a software overlay to dim the displayed image. For security reasons, the Android operating system prevents third-party apps from directly accessing the TV's hardware backlight. A software overlay is the only possible and secure way to control brightness via an app.
3. What is "Panel Protection" (Burn-In Protection) and can I disable it?
Panel Protection is a safety feature that makes automatic adjustments to protect your screen from burn-in. However, if you prefer full manual control over your brightness settings, you can disable this automatic feature (at your own risk) by long-pressing the respective filter. Long-pressing it again will reactivate it.
4. Do I need the Pro version for basic dimming?
No! The free version includes all the essential core features for night-time dimming, and you can use it indefinitely. The Pro version is meant for users who want advanced features like specific color filters or automated routines.
